Bays of Mljet covered in waste

By  The Dubrovnik Times Mar 19, 2018

For many years, in this spring, the shores of the National Park Mljet get full of enormous amounts of marine waste. Unfortunately, that happened last weekend – Dubrovacki vjesnik reports. Located on the southern coast of Mljet, bays Gonoturska and Blace are again buried the garbage.

During the winter period when the southern winds dominate this area, backed by sea currents stretching along our coast, enormous amounts of communal, but also medical waste, become a huge problem that employees have been struggling with for years in the Mljet National Park.

-Since we have been facing the same problems for several years, we can safely say that most of the waste comes from neighboring countries of Albania and Montenegro, because of southern winds and sea currents, which is clearly visible on the waste labels we collect on the spot – they commented for Dubrovacki vjesnik.

In recent years, the National Park Mljet, along with the great efforts of its own staff that keeps everything clean, has created great voluntary cleaning programs. However, they feel like they are fighting the same battle a year after year.

-We send this appeal to public to responsible behavior with waste and we ask all those at higher levels to try to raise the problem at international level because the seriousness of this problem, which occurs year after year in ever-greater and larger proportions certainly deserves it – they concluded.
