Dubrovnik is in the running for the “European Tree of the Year” competition. The contest is held by the Environmental Partnership Association (EPA), an organization supported by the European Commission.
At a meeting held today in the offices of the Dubrovnik – Neretva County a co-ordinator for this award for the next three years was presented. It was also decided that the iconic Plane tree in Trsteno will be put forward as a candidate for the 2018 “European Tree of the Year” award.
The Oriental Planes located on the central market place of Trsteno is over 500 years old and is around 50 metres tall.
The European Tree of the Year award was started in 2011 and has been running every year since. The purpose of the European Tree of the Year is to highlight the significance of old trees in the natural and cultural heritage that deserves our care and protection.
